Event 5 – 8 Game

The fifth event on the MGA calendar was another 8 Game rotation ($350 buy-in) which recorded 15 entries and saw us crown another unique champion. Michael O’Grady, a well known local character in the Sydney poker scene, would ensure that Gary Benson’s two previous second place finishes would not be improved upon.

The 8 game rotation is a timeless classic that covers draw, stud and flop disciplines as well as fixed limit, pot limit and no limit betting structures.

At the start of play we randomise the dealer button via ‘high card’ and then randomise the game via the same process. There is a particular order of games that then follow, here is the list from game 1 through to 8:

  • Limit 2-7 Triple Draw
  • Holdem
  • Stud Hi/Lo – 8 or better
  • Razz
  • Omaha Hi/Lo – 8 or better
  • Stud
  • No Limit Holdem
  • Pot Limit Omaha

The 8 game rotation is popular amongst mixed game enthusiasts both new to the game and those operating at expert level. Until most recently, via Mixed Games Academy, it was the largest mix of games that could be played in Australia. We now have 9 and even 10 game mixes on offer and very shortly a 20 game ‘dealers choice’ option will be played, for the first time, here in Australia!

But I digress.

The banter was free flowing for most of the game with Michael asking Gary on several occasions “Which game do you think I’ll bust you in Gary?”

Ultimately it would come down to a Limit Holdem hand when all the chips would go in and Michael’s J8os flopping top two pair would be well and truly enough for the win.

The winners circle included:

1st – Michael O’Grady $1,800

2nd – Gary Benson $1,120

3rd – Scott Redman $900

4th – Matthew Ginn $670

Our next event will be the $900 – 9 Game where we add the glorious game of No Limit 2-7 Single Draw!

Get in the mix!
